Seeing San Antonio
Welcome to San Antonio! As the second largest city in Texas and the center of Tejano culture and Texas tourism, the beautiful “River City” is sure to offer something to please everyone. With everything from boat tours to spelunking, there is plenty to see and do outside the Convention Center.

Museums and More
The most visited sight in San Antonio is the Alamo, and with good reason. Originally the Roman Catholic Mission San Antonio de Valero, this historic building was the site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, when a small group of Texan soldiers defended against a 13-day siege by the Mexican army. Almost all of the Texans were killed during the culminating battle, and today the Alamo is a museum to honor their memory (www.thealamo.org). San Antonio’s premier museum, focusing on Texas history and science and water resources, is the Witte Museum (www.wittemuseum.org; (210) 357-1900). The San Antonio Museum of Art boasts the finest collection of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art in the southern US in a converted historic 1904 brewery complex (www.samuseum.org; (210) 978-8100).

Riverboats and Restaurants
The Riverwalk is a 2.5 mile network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River, one story beneath downtown San Antonio. Lined with bars, shops, and restaurants of all cultural flavorings, it is a beautiful way to experience some of the city – either by foot or by boat! Rio San Antonio Cruises offers boat tours down the Riverwalk. Tickets can be purchased at the Rivercenter Mall across from the Hilton Hotel, or call (210) 244-5700. After a relaxing boat tour, try the guacamole for two prepared tableside at Boudro’s, a Riverwalk and city favorite (www.boudros.com; (210) 224-8484). More shopping can be found in historic Market Square for authentic Mexican artifacts and souvenirs (www.marketsquaresa.com; (210) 207-8600) and in La Villita for unique local art, specialty shops, and restaurants (www.lavillita.com; (210) 207-8610).

Cool Caverns
The surrounding areas of the city are also home to two of the country’s most extensive and unique cave networks. Cascade Caverns, a 15-minute drive from the city center in Boerne, offers one-hour tours through its million-year-old live caverns, showcasing a 100 foot underground waterfall (www.cascadecaverns.com). Just ten minutes away is Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest cavern open to the public in Texas. After a guided tour, pan for gems and minerals or climb the 50-foot tall Watchtower and zip line more than 350 feet to the ground (www.naturalbridgecaverns.com; (210) 651-6101).

Weekend Attractions
If you’re staying in town for the weekend, check out one of the city’s world-famous amusement parks. Seaworld San Antonio will be open Friday-Sunday and features rollercoasters and educational shows with exotic sea creatures (www.seaworld.com/sanantonio; (800) 700-7786). Six Flags Fiesta Texas is located just 15 minutes from downtown off of La Cantera Parkway and is open Saturday and Sunday (www.sixflags.com/fiestaTexas; (210) 697-5050). For a range of German specialties like bratwurst, beer, and festive dancing, head over to Beethoven Halle & Garten for the annual Oktoberfest San Antonio on Friday or Saturday (www.beethovenmaennerchor.com; (210) 222-1521).
